The Central Vermont Council on Aging is looking for volunteers to help with yardwork, spring cleaning and other services to help older adults who need extra support to maintain independent living.
“For more than 40 years Central Vermont Council on Aging has been supporting Central Vermonters to age with dignity and choice,” Mary Rose Dougherty, volunteer outreach coordinator for the organization, said in an email. “We collaborate with many community partners to develop and coordinate a comprehensive system of support.”
The council serves Vermonters ages 60 and older, regardless of income. Spring is a busy time for the agency, because many adults need support with yardwork and other household projects. Although these projects might seem insignificant, they allow older adults to stay on their properties and out of care centers, which in turn helps keep their communities on an even keel, Dougherty said.
“Remaining a part of the community and socially connected is important to the well-being of older adults,” she said. “(The council) works with many community partners and volunteers to help make this possible. Good Neighbors are an essential member of the (council’s) team.”
Volunteers help older adults with everything from grocery shopping to special events to minor repair projects. They also serve as board members for the council, provide companionship and help people organize. These services are offered free of charge with the goal of keeping people in their communities.
“When clients are able to stay in their homes, the community is stabilized,” Dougherty said. “Volunteers bring added value to communities, strengthening them by addressing basic needs that become more challenging as we age.”
Volunteers themselves also benefit, she said.
“People who volunteer reap many benefits from their service. They often feel more connected to their community; they are happier, less stressed, and healthier; and they may develop or put to use professional skills. Many cement strong bonds with the people they serve,” she said.
Volunteers can be any age and can commit as much or as little time as they want. Even an hour or two a month is appreciated, Dougherty said. People who want to work with the council must pass a background check.
