Newport
After letting a two-goal lead get away, the Tigers bounced back in overtime for a 3-2 defeat of Hinsdale at Sichol Field.
A bounce, in fact, made the difference: Cooper Skarin’s 18-yard drive five minutes into the first extra session solved the Pacers’ netminder and clanked in off the crossbar for the win.
With Skarin and Ben Gallagher providing accurate service to the wings on attack, the Tigers (3-8-1) struck twice in the opening half. Joe Boliero got the first, converting a breakaway feed from Gallagher. Isaac Lafayette netted the second on a pass from Boliero, who has amassed five goals and an assist in Newport’s last three matches.
The Tigers lost their momentum with the halftime break, however, and Hinsdale (5-7-0) equalized to send the match to overtime. Mike Wilkinson and Jarred Meyette helped settle the defense down in front of goalkeeper Garret Harold, and Newport got its game back in time for the victory.
The victory unofficially leaves the Tigers tied with Moultonborough for the last invitation to the upcoming 16-team NHIAA Division IV state tournament. Newport is off until hosting Franklin next Tuesday.
