Voters in Vermont House district Orange-Washington-Addison will fill two seats on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Democratic incumbent Larry Satcowitz and Progressive/Democrat Emery Mattheis, both of Randolph, face Republicans Lance Ryan of Roxbury and Stephen Webster of Randolph.
The Valley News asked the candidates in a survey about their experience, why they are running and what they see as the biggest issue facing the state. Satcowitz’s answers, edited lightly for style, appear below.
Satcowitz, a three-term representative and former Randolph Selectboard member, says the biggest problem is that the Legislature can’t act quickly enough on good solutions. He proposes citizens’ assemblies to help. Mattheis, Ryan and Webster did not return the questionnaire.
LARRY SATCOWITZ

Democrat · VT House Orange-Washington-Addison
60, Democrat, Randolph
Political experience: Three terms as a state representative and five terms on the Randolph Selectboard.
Professional experience: Teacher, house builder, landscaper, warehouse worker and more.
Community service: Randolph Food Co-op board of directors.
Why are you running? I wish to continue to use my life, work and legislative experiences to help make Vermont an even better place to live for all of us.
Biggest issue: Underlying most of our difficult issues is the inability of our usual legislative process to work in a timely manner to implement good solutions. Citizens’ assemblies, used all over the world, can meaningfully help improve the process.
