Voters in New Hampshire House District 9 will choose between Democrat Ella Barrett of Orange and Republican Bradley Macrae of Dorchester for one seat on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The Valley News asked the candidates in a survey about their experience, why they are running and what they see as the biggest issue facing the state. Barrett’s answers, edited lightly for style, appear below.

Barrett, a 22-year-old first-time candidate, names the cost of living as the biggest issue and focuses on housing, healthcare, childcare and property tax relief. Macrae did not return the questionnaire.

22, Democrat, Orange

Political experience: First-time candidate; former New Hampshire Democratic Party intern; active in local civic and school issues.

Professional experience: Substitute teacher; peer academic coach; former Upper Valley Land Trust intern; have worked since age 14 and throughout college.

Community service: Food drives; packed 10,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger; helped distribute aid to unhoused neighbors.

Why are you running? I’m running to give back to the towns that raised me. I grew up in Orange, graduated from Mascoma, and want people to stay and build lives here. I’ll show up, listen and work hard for our community.

Biggest issue: The biggest issue is the cost of living. I’d expand housing, healthcare and childcare access, strengthen public schools, and reduce the burden on local taxpayers with real property tax relief.
