Newport — Sometimes the best thing to get out of the doldrums is to invite the neighbor over and wrestle him to the ground.

Having dropped its last four dual meets dating back to last month, the Newport High wrestling team rediscovered its winning ways with a 54-24 defeat of rival Mascoma on Tuesday night at Newport High School. Only six weight classes were contested, and the Tigers took five of them in a rebound of fortune from recent defeats.

“It was good to see our guys respond positively,” Newport coach Cole Boone said in an email. “(The Royals) have a lot of young talent, and they carry themselves very well both on and off the mat.”

Gavin Lovely got the night started for the Tigers with a 44-second pin of Mascoma’s Raven Streeter at 182 pounds. The Royals’ Tyler Bill responded with a heavyweight pin of Cameron Hall in 1 minute, 20 seconds.

Newport took the remaining four matches, all by fall, with Jordan Warburton (120 pounds), Joshua Almstrom (145), Dylan Palmer (152) and Matt Hennig (170) claiming the points.

“I was happy to see both Josh Almstrom and Matt Hennig get solid wins against two tough opponents,” Boone noted.

The Tigers are bound for a tri-meet with Exeter at Nashua North on Saturday. The Royals are scheduled compete in the Salem quad meet on Saturday.

Concord — Dylan Patel’s triple-double and Josh King’s big night powered the Eagles (1-4) to their first win of the season.

Patel amassed 11 points, 11 blocks and 13 rebounds as counterpoint to King’s 22-point effort. Mid Vermont Christian needed every bit of it, ultimately getting the decision with an 11-3 edge on free-throw points.

“We had a really good effort from all of the guys,” MVCS coach Mike O’Leary said. “Josh King has really stepped up the last couple of games and put the team on his back. Dylan’s 11 blocks were huge.

“Our team has really figured out how to play together, and it’s starting to show. (Trinity Christian) beat us by 19 in a scrimmage earlier this season, so this is a good turnaround.”

Cade Paquette contributed 14 points to the win for Mid Vermont, which hosts Northfield on Thursday.

Mascoma 69, Newfound 51

Bristol, n.h. — A lineup adjustment sparked the Royals for a big offensive effort to top the Bears.

Ben Schwarz made his first start at point guard, moving Killian Dowd to the two-guard spot, and had a strong night distributing the basketball, according to coach Jim Barry. Mascoma came out of the gates clicking, building a 33-14 lead at halftime.

Dakota Decocq led the Royals with 17 points. Dowd finished with 10 points, and Connor Thompson had eight points. Caleb McAlister and Seth Martin, who played his best game of the season, according to Barry, each had seven points.

The Royals (3-8 overall, 3-5 NHIAA) host Berlin on Friday.

Sharon 73, Chelsea 48

Chelsea, Vt. — Sam Knoerlein and Austin Gaudette combined for 55 points to lead the Phoenix (8-0) over the Red Devils.

“Overall, I’m worried about us getting a little complacent on the defensive end. Our defensive intensity wasn’t there tonight,” Sharon coach Blake Fabrikant said.

The Phoenix visit South Royalton on Friday.

Fall Mountain 50, Stevens 42

Langdon, n.h. — The Wildcats opened the game on a 15-4 run and held on from there to beat the visiting Cardinals (3-6).

Girls Basketball

Thetford 38, Randolph 30

Thetford — Playing their first game since Dec. 29, not to mention their first Capital Division contest of the season, the Panthers (5-1) came alive late to get past the Galloping Ghosts (8-2) at Vaughan Gym.

Grace Davis turned the contest Thetford’s way in the final minutes. Tied at 30, Davis buried the Panthers’ only 3-pointer of the night and followed that with a steal and layup to put TA ahead to stay. Danielle Robinson’s double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds topped the Thetford scoresheet; Davis finished with nine points, and Kate Vaughan contributed 10 rebounds to go with six points.

“We hadn’t been in the gym in a while in a game situation, so our timing was off,” TA coach Eric Ward said. “Our defense was OK but, in the second half, our defense turned our offense loose a little.”

TA outscored Randolph in the final quarter, 18-4, to take the contest. Shea Fordham led the Ghosts with 10 points.

Thetford visits Williamstown on Thursday.

Four players did all of the scoring for Mid Vermont Christian. Hayley Goodwin led the charge with 18 points, followed by 17 from Sydney Goodwin, 16 from Rachel Seale and nine from Nykrisha Jenks.

“We played pretty good dead-ball defense,” MVCS coach Chris Goodwin said. “We had a number of steals in the second half to spread the difference.”

Whitcomb-Rochester pays the Eagles a visit in Quechee on Thursday night.

Bethel — The Mountaineers played their best game of the season, improving to 3-2 with a victory over the Royals.

Hayley Mears had 21 points to pace Whitchester, which built a 29-2 lead at halftime. Toni Turner added a career-high 14 points. Amelia Mattrick and Sylvie Coltey each had eight points.

“It was a breakout game for us,” Mountaineers coach Dennis Wood said. “We hadn’t played well in our last two games (both losses) and rebounded tonight. Hopefully, we can carry this throughout the rest of the season.”

Both teams will face Mid Vermont Christian next; Whitchester in Quechee on Thursday and South Royalton (0-7) at home on Tuesday.

Newport 42, Windsor 33

Windsor — The Tigers went 14-for-20 from the free-throw line and scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Yellowjackets.

Olivia Rockwood scored 23 points to pace the Jacks.

“Newport wanted it a little more. We just need to find some help on the offensive end; defensively we’re playing OK,” Windsor coach Bruce Mackay said.

Both teams return to action on Friday when Newport (6-5 overall, 5-3 NHIAA) visits Monadnock and Windsor (3-5) heads to Bellows Falls.

Hartford 43, Springfield 31

White River Junction — The Hurricanes built a 30-17 lead at halftime and held on to beat the Cosmos.

Corey Lieberman led a balanced Hartford offensive effort with 12 points. Madison Druge added eight points, Megan Bushway had seven and Michaela Ricker had six.

“The girls played well. Defensively, we had active hands, active feed and we were really aggressive, which is something we’ve been lacking,” Hartford coach Troy Guerin said.

The Canes (3-5) visit Woodstock on Friday.

Newfound 62, Mascoma 28

West Canaan — With Savanna Bony pouring in a game-high 24 points, the Bears used a 21-2 first quarter to drop the Royals (3-6, 3-8).

“We didn’t play well,” Mascoma coach Walt Hammond said. “They are a good basketball team, and you can’t make any mistakes against them if you want to compete. We took a step backward today.”

Abby Duhaime and Lizz Pelton each netted six points for the Royals, who visit Berlin on Friday night.

Fall Mountain 54, Stevens 13

Langdon, n.h. — Still without two key players, the Cardinals (2-5, 4-6) were no match for the Wildcats (8-1, 11-1).

GMC’s Sean Leflore hit a baseline jumper with 25 seconds left for a 59-59 tie. After a timeout, Colby-Sawyer held the ball for a final shot, losing it out of bounds on a steal attempt. Given a second chance, Taylor Grande hit a leaping Bean with a pass, and the sophomore converted with 0.6 seconds on the clock.
