Newport
Having dropped its last four dual meets dating back to last month, the Newport High wrestling team rediscovered its winning ways with a 54-24 defeat of rival Mascoma on Tuesday night at Newport High School. Only six weight classes were contested, and the Tigers took five of them in a rebound of fortune from recent defeats.
“It was good to see our guys respond positively,” Newport coach Cole Boone said in an email. “(The Royals) have a lot of young talent, and they carry themselves very well both on and off the mat.”
Gavin Lovely got the night started for the Tigers with a 44-second pin of Mascoma’s Raven Streeter at 182 pounds. The Royals’ Tyler Bill responded with a heavyweight pin of Cameron Hall in 1 minute, 20 seconds.
Newport took the remaining four matches, all by fall, with Jordan Warburton (120 pounds), Joshua Almstrom (145), Dylan Palmer (152) and Matt Hennig (170) claiming the points.
“I was happy to see both Josh Almstrom and Matt Hennig get solid wins against two tough opponents,” Boone noted.
The Tigers are bound for a tri-meet with Exeter at Nashua North on Saturday. The Royals are scheduled compete in the Salem quad meet on Saturday.
