FAIRLEE โ A stretch of Route 5 reopened Tuesday afternoon after being closed for more than two months as state transportation officials worked to stabilize a rock ledge where a rockslide occurred in March.
The affected portion of the road, just south of the Bradford, Vt., town line between Sawyer Mountain Drive, and Mountain Road in Fairlee, reopened at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to a VT-Alert from the Vermont Department of Public Safety.
The road had been closed since March 10, when Fairlee Police responded to a report of falling rocks in the area.
When Police Chief Wayne Briggs arrived on the scene, he discovered a piece of ledge the size of his vehicle blocking the northbound lane. No one was injured and no vehicles sustained damage, though a there was damage to a utility pole.
The road remained closed through April and much of May while the Agency of Transportation initiated a project to remove loose material from the 300-foot rock ledge in an area known as “The Ledges.”
On Tuesday afternoon, the Fairlee Police Department posted a notice announcing the road’s reopening to social media and thanked the crew from the Lyndon, Vt.-based contractor J.A. McDonald for its efforts in resolving the issue.
