Newport — A 23-year-old Claremont man has pleaded not guilty to having sex with a girl under the age of 16.

Tyler Robbins was arraigned on Wednesday in Sullivan Superior Court in Newport, where he answered to two counts of felonious sexual assault.

Judge Brian Tucker released Robbins on $10,000 personal recognizance bail and several conditions, including that he not have contact with the victim or her family, or any juvenile under the age of 16.

In late February, Claremont police received a call from the girl’s father, who reported a potential sexual assault, according to a Claremont police affidavit filed in the Newport courthouse.

The police learned soon after that the girl had visited her primary care physician regarding a potential pregnancy and authorities scheduled a forensic interview, according to the affidavit written by officer Joshua Wade.

The girl told investigators that she and Robbins started to spend time together in late 2017 and that they had sexual intercourse on several occasions, according to the affidavit.

In an interview with police, Robbins allegedly acknowledged that he knew the girl was under age and that “it wasn’t right,” the affidavit states.

The charges allege that Robbins knowingly engaged in sexual penetration with a girl who is between the age of 13 and 15. The girl was known to Robbins.

Robbins is due next in court on May 10.
