CHARLESTOWN โ€” At the polls Tuesday, voters overwhelmingly rejected a proposal for the town to purchase 3.2 acres of land located at 291 Old Springfield Road as the future site of a new fire station, with 232 votes in favor of the item and 641 votes against it.

The cost of the land would have been $269,000.

Voters also shot down a petitioned article to appropriate $250,000 in the interest of establishing a transport ambulance service through the Charlestown Fire Department, with 313 people voting in favor of it and 559 people voting against it.

Golden Cross Ambulance currently provides emergency medical services to Charlestown, and renewed the contract slated to end March 31 for another five years.

In a five-way race for two Selectboard spots, both three-year terms, Jessica Lemieux won with 516 votes, and Nancy Houghton also won with 392 votes. The other candidates for the seats, Jeremy Wood received 248 votes, Raymond Gosetti received 187 votes and Armadeus Davidson received 114 votes.

Voters also approved the $7 million budget, within it an operating budget of $5.8 million, a Water Fund of $636,000 and a Sewer Fund of $525,000. This budget is an increase from the $6.7 million budget voters approved last year.

On election day, 887 voters turned out, out of the 3,038 total voters on the checklist.
