WHITE RIVER JUNCTION โ€” Meters to test the moisture content of firewood are available to borrow from Vermont libraries this winter, according to a news release from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation.

The handheld moisture monitors are available at libraries in Bradford, Hartford, Norwich, Quechee, Randolph, Strafford, Wells River and Windsor. The program is co-sponsored by the Vermont Department of Libraries and the DEC’s Air Quality and Climate Division.

The program is designed to promote “proper burning practices” for firewood to protect air quality and public health.

Wood that includes less than 20% moisture burns “hotter and cleaner” than wet wood and reduces fine particle pollution, which can cause haze and health problems. It is also more energy efficient to burn dry wood than wet.

โ€œTo prevent poor air quality and safeguard public health, it is key to follow proper wood burning practices,โ€ DEC Commissioner Misty Sinsigalli said in the release. โ€œUsing dry, seasoned wood reduces smoke, cuts air emissions, and protects our families, neighbors, and the environment.โ€
