Charlie Kirk did not deserve to be murdered. Charlie Kirk does not deserve to be deemed a martyr. Christians and Republicans have the right to mourn a person they agreed with. They need to know they are not obligated to recast a flawed human being as a saint. The only motive I have heard from his killer is that Kirk promoted hate. If that perception misunderstood Kirk, then Kirk had a serious deficiency in his ability to communicate, as it is a widely held interpretation of his words.
The right wing alleges Charlie Kirk was killed for exercising his right to free speech. Numerous people have been suspended or fired for their speech about Kirk. The military is making allegiance to a pro-Kirk stance a condition of serving our country. Apparently, you are only free to agree with a constricted orthodoxy and the army is fighting a culture war against Americans. If Kirk could denounce others, then we can denounce him.
Let me say the local Republicans I know retain their ability to think independently. There are a lot of labels out there, so do not believe what the right says about the left, nor what the left says about the right. Instead, I expect our local Republicans to fight vigorously for our ability to disagree, as will I.
