NEWBURY, Vt. — Residents in Town Meeting voting on Tuesday defeated a proposal to hire a professional assessor and instead will stick with the system of Newbury electing its listers.
The 156-50 vote rejected a proposal to have the town either contract with an assessing firm or hire an assessor who would report to the Selectboard. The Selectboard had argued that a professional was needed because the job of assessing property has become more complex.
The $640,350 general fund was approved on a 164-40 vote, and the $780,000 highway fund passed, 159-44.
Selectboard member Alma Roystan, who has served on the board for 24 years, won another three-year term. She was unopposed.
