WEST LEBANON, NH — Doctor Vincent Alfred Memoli, 69, died peacefully on July 12, 2020, at his home, after a long illness. He was born in New York City in 1950, and educated at Fordham Preparatory School and Fordham University. Doctor Memoli received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1976. Such was his talent and drive that he published significant collaborative biochemical research while still in medical school. Doctor Memoli completed residency training in Anatomic Pathology at Rush-Presbyterian-St Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago in 1979, joining the faculty immediately thereafter. From 1983 until his retirement in 2017 and beyond, Doctor Memoli taught and practiced anatomic pathology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the now-Geisel School of Medicine, rising rapidly to the rank of full Professor. He won countless awards for his teaching; and led numerous original and brilliant research studies that were published; his pioneering work on immunoperoxidase staining has led to its use as a standard diagnostic tool in laboratories around the world. Doctor Memoli served as Section Chief, Anatomic Pathology, for many years, and throughout his tenure at Dartmouth, he was the go-to consultant for interpretation of complex and challenging biopsies.
The breadth of Doctor Memoli’s knowledge and expertise in a dozen subspecialties of surgical and autopsy pathology was unequaled. His originality, rigor coupled with support and humor, kindness and efficacy as a teacher for resident physicians, Fellows and medical students are legendary.
Doctor Memoli a Bronx boy, loved his Yankees; old movies, about which he possessed encyclopedic knowledge; jazz; opera; the rights and dignity of all persons; and from adolescence onward, cooking for his fortunate family and friends. He savored observing the wildlife on Crystal Lake.
Doctor Memoli was predeceased by his parents Natale Memoli and Albina (Luca) Memoli; and by his brother Robert and sister Rosemaria. He is survived by his beloved nephew and niece, Ryan Memoli, Esquire, and Shelby Memoli; and by their mother, his sister-in-law Celeste Memoli; by his best friend of 48 years, Henry Schneiderman MD, and Cynthia Schneiderman who gave such comfort during his last weeks; by his dear friend and colleague Miguel Marin-Padilla MD; by his nephew Joseph Natale Schneiderman; and by extended family and grateful students and colleagues at Dartmouth and worldwide, too numerous to mention. His loss creates a hole in the world that cannot be filled. The many persons who love Vincent are heartbroke at his death.
