Sabin graduated from Mansfield High School in 1959 and received a BFA – Bachelor of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design in 1964. He served in the Army National Guard from November 1964 to October 1970.
His career in woodworking design led to awards from the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen in 1975, the Purchase Prize and Best in Show in 1977. The selection of his three-legged stool was accepted into Craft Multiples in the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
His original designs have been featured in a variety of magazines and several galleries in New England and he received patents for his designs from the U.S. Patent Office. His mathematical block system based on the Fibonacci number series has been used in selected Montessori schools in Canada and the United States.
His writing on “The Symmetry of Spiral Phyllotaxis: An Artist’s View” was included in Symmetry 2000 Part 1, a symposium held at the Wenner-Gren Centre in Stockholm, Sweden in September, 2000.
An avid reader, he also enjoyed many outdoor activities in his earlier days, including canoeing, running, biking and swimming. His passion was to investigate nature and its relation to math, science, art and architecture.
He leaves four siblings: Kent H. Sabin of Jacksonville, Fla.; Sandra J. Northfield of Vero Beach, Fla.; Peter E. Sabin of Warner, N.H.; and Judy G. Jackson of Houston, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A private service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018, at Chadwick Funeral Home with Chaplain Cheryl Dean presiding. A celebration of his life for family and friends will be held at a later date.
