Anchorage, Alaska — Lyme’s Evan Nichols won gold medals in one individual and one team event for the East roster competing at the recent Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Junior Nationals held at the Karl Eid Ski Jumps Kincaid Park in Anchorage on Feb. 20-24.

Nichols’ individual victory came in the U16 Nordic combined, where he went from fourth after the jump portion to first after posting a top time of 16 minutes, 19 seconds in the five-kilometer cross country ski segment.

Nichols was also part of a U20 team jumping squad that won its division; Nichols two-jump tally of 222.7 points was second about the four members of the East team.

Nichols also suited up for the U16 Nordic combined team competition in which the East took second. He narrowly came home with a bronze medal in the U16 individual special jump, missing out by .3 points.

Several other Upper Valley competitors also made the trek to Alaska for junior nationals. Hanover High’s Teddy Ruth took 16th, Ford Sayre’s Cameron Forbush was 17th and Sunapee High’s Cameron Summerton claimed 23rd, all competing for the East, in the U16 special jumping meet.

Forbush finished 11th in the U16 Nordic combined competition, built on a 10th-place result in the jump portion of the event.

He also teamed up with Caleb Zuckerman to place seventh in the Nordic combined team sprint. All three joined separate East teams for the team jump.

Three Reach Eastern Finals

Hanover — Three members of the Ford Sayre Academy alpine team have made the 22-person New Hampshire roster for the Eastern U16 finals set for next month at Waterville Valley.

Maya Holmes made the squad based on her Tecnica Cup series results, six U16 races held in January and February. Two other Ford Sayre athletes, Lucy Doyle and Eric Goodney, landed on the team with their performances at the two-race New Hampshire Alpine Racing Association U16 finals series last weekend, an event at Cannon Mountain that was reduced to one day of racing because of high winds. Doyle and Goodney were each second in their respective giant slaloms to make the Eastern roster.

Doyle led four teammates in the top 15, with Katie Stannard ninth, Ellie Stannard 10th, Meredith Olenec 13th and Jasmine Tracy 15th. Dylan Kotlowitz had FSA’s second-best finish behind Goodney, taking 28th.

The Eastern U16 finals at Waterville Valley are set for March 22-25. At stake are roster spots for the U16 Can-Am series at Quebec’s Mont Tremblant in April.

NHARA Qualifers Wrap Up

Lyme Center — The NHARA wrapped up its Western Division U12 and U14 qualifying series races with a pair of slaloms at the Dartmouth Skiway on Sunday.

Ford Sayre’s Zach Tracy completed an undefeated tear through U12 boys competition by winning both runs on Sunday, beating teammate Schuyler Clapp in the opener and fellow Ford Sayre skier Nick Reiss in the conclusion. Dahlia Fuld paced Ford Sayre in the girls U12 division, placing fourth.

Lucy Curtis claimed both runs for Ford Sayre in the U14 girls division, while teammate Ella Goodney was second and third in the two races. Jack Ross and Luke Dwyer both claimed a second for the club’s U14 boys.

Hartford Lacrosse Intro

White River Junction — The Hartford Youth Lacrosse Club and the Hartford Parks and Recreation Deparment will welcome lacrosse newcomers to a pair of open-stick drop-ins in Hartford High School’s gymnasium next month.

The “Try Lacrosse” events will be held on March 4 and 11 from 3-5 p.m. and are open to boys and girls in grades 3-8 with no prior lacrosse experience. The sessions will serve as an opportunity to drop in and try out the sport for free with no commitment and no need to bring eqiupment. Some new gear will be on hand to try out for sizing; the HYLC will hold a donate/swap/sale as part of the March 11 event for anyone in need of gear for the coming campaign.

Walk With Ease Class

White River Junction — The Upper Valley Aquatic Center, working with the Arthritis Foundation, will offer a program called Walk With Ease, aimed toward getting adults with arthritis moving, starting on March 5.

Wellness coach and certified fitness instructor Kathleen Danforth will lead the classes, which will run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4-5 p.m. through April 13, with another session planned for later that month.

WUHS Fishing Derby

Woodstock — More than 40 Woodstock Union High School students joined five fifth-graders from the Woodstock Elementary School to take part in the schools’ annual Physh Ed ice fishing tournament on Feb. 14-15.

Issy Hiller took the win in the largemouth bass competition with a catch weighing in at 4.5 pounds. Denver Remich claimed the biggest Northern pike with a 22-inch specimen.

The second day of the tournament saw Danny Drebber win the bass competition with a 2.8-pound catch. Levi Lynds claimed the longest Northern pike, checking in at 23 inches.

Local game warden Jason Gravelle helped out chaperones Mark Little, Griffin Thomas, Jackson Howe and Cody TanCreti in overseeing the tournament.

Youth Trout Camps

West Lebanon — Applications are being accepted for the eighth Vermont Trout Camp for Teens, a five-day camp open to young anglers between the ages of 13 and 16 years of age.

The camp is held at Jackson’s Lodge on Lake Wallace in the Northeast Kingdom town of Canaan, Vt. Participants can take in struction in fly casting, entomology, on-stream fly fishing tactics, fly tying and coldwater fisheries management and biology. While campers come from all over the country, the program is interested in identifying Vermont youth interested in taking part.

The New Hampshire chapter of Trout Unlimited also has plans for a youth trout camp running June 20-24 at the Tlen at Bear Tree in Pittsburg. The five-day event teaches the art and science of fly tying and environmental stewardship.

AAU Raiders Tryouts

Concord — The Granite State Raiders AAU boys basketball program will hold tryouts for the coming season on March 24-25.

The program is open to boys in grades 6-10. Sixth- through eighth-graders will work out from noon-1:30 p.m. the first day and 8:30-10 a.m. the second; ninth- and 10th-graders will try out from 1:30-3 p.m. on the opening day and 10-11:30 a.m. the second day. All workouts will be staged at Bishop Brady High School.
