HARTFORD — Before settling in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers, consider heading out to run or walk in the Ledyard RedZone 5K.

“Obviously it’s kind of a celebration in the country, everyone’s going to watch the Super Bowl so why not go out for a run beforehand?” Scott Hausler, executive director of the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department. “Jokingly you can say you got your exercise in in the morning and you’re all prepared for the Super Bowl food and drinks and to watch the game.”

The race takes place from 9:30 a.m.-noon on Sunday. The route begins and ends at Dothan Brook School, located at 2300 Christian St. in White River Junction. It is $10 to register in advance and $20 on the day of the race. Proceeds benefit the recreation department’s scholarship fund.

The department started the race seven years ago and draws about 100 participants each year. It was named after the area of a football field between the 20-yard line and the end zone.

People can walk or run. Strollers and dogs on leashes are welcome. Prizes will be awarded for people who wear their best — and most creative — football attire.

“We try to make it a fun little event,” Hausler said. We’ve got quite a few folks who have run the race or walked the race for the past few years.”

Volunteers are still needed to help register and guide participants during the race.

“Volunteers make up a big part of the event every year,” Hausler said.
