HANOVER โ Dartmouth College plans to close the primary gym open to students, faculty and staff as part of an ongoing effort to upgrade the school’s energy infrastructure.
The Lewinstein Athletic Center, on West Wheelock Street, is slated to close in mid-June. The college plans to open a temporary gym on the second floor of the John W. Berry Sports Center to replace the Zimmerman Fitness Center, which is in Lewinstein.
Zimmerman is the only “nonvarsity” fitness center on campus. It and other facilities inside Lewinstein, including two swimming pools, fitness classrooms and offices for 66 members of the athletics and recreation staff, will close on June 15.
Alumni Gym, also in Lewinstein, is slated to close May 4.
Historically, the college said in its announcement, the indoor fitness facilities see demand fall by half during the summer months.
Dartmouth is modernizing the heating and cooling systems across campus, which necessitated closing Lewinstein. The building is slated to reopen in August.
