Rockville, Md. — Kimball Union Academy graduate Evan Russell came up short on Monday in his bid to qualify for this month’s U.S. Open golf championship.

Playing as an amateur, Russell shot rounds of 75-74—149 in the 36-hole qualifier on Woodmont Country Club’s North Course. The recent University of Hartford graduate and part-time Grantham resident was well off the pace in the 55-player qualifier, from which three golfers advanced to the Open.

Billy Hurley III won the event at 9-under-par 185. Chase Parker and Dennis McCarthy claimed the final two spots out of Woodmont in a three-man playoff.

Russell is in the field for this week’s New England Open, which will be contested on the Quechee Club’s Lakeland Course on Wednesday and Thursday.
