“Honoring our Past; Embracing our Future” is the theme of the celebration, recognizing the historic anniversary of the dedication of the original Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in 1893, and pointing toward a vision for the future. Patients, employees and visitors are invited to the opening of the event, which will take place at noon on Thursday in the rotunda at DHMC.
Jim Varnum, who served as president of Mary Hitchcock for 28 years and who guided the hospital when it moved from Hanover into the current medical center location in 1991, is the grand marshal for the celebration, and will offer opening remarks. The North Country Chordsmen barbershop quartet will sing, and a two-minute video titled “125 Years in 125 Seconds” will be shown. After the formal program, patients, visitors and employees can enjoy refreshments.
Public events for the celebration continue Sunday from 1-3 p.m. To honor the tradition called “Hospital Days,” when members of the community would bring donations of food and clothing for hospital patients, Dartmouth-Hitchcock is hosting a food drive to benefit Listen Community Services and the Upper Valley Haven as a way of giving back to the community. Dartmouth-Hitchcock leadership will make presentations on Sunday, and a health fair will take place on campus. The full schedule for “Honoring our Past, Embracing our Future” can be found on the Dartmouth-Hitchcock web site at http://www.dartmouth-hitchcock.org/about_dh/history.html.
