Johanne Herold

Hanover, N.H. — Johanne Marie (Randlov) Herold, age 96, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, at Kendal at Hanover. Johanne was born on Feb. 16, 1921, near Copenhagen, Denmark, to Christian and Johanne (Andersen) Randlov. She is survived by her children, Christopher, Sylvie, Karen (Mark Isaacson) and Robert (Joan Sarles); and grandchildren, Christina Carro (Dave), Arianna Reale (Frank), and Richard (Zoe); Ella Bellew, Peter Bellew and Ivan Bellew; Peter Isaacson (Kate Burgess), Tess Goode (Dierdre), Anna Isaacson (Sam Lasser) and Noah Isaacson; and Werner and Emma; as well as many children and grandchildren of her deceased siblings, Karen Jepsen, Gerda Nelson, Else Fletcher, Axel Randlov, and Erik Randlov.

Johanne grew up in Denmark until 1939, just before the German invasion, when she emigrated to New York City to join her mother and siblings. She became a model with the Conover agency. In New York she met Richard Herold, a mechanical engineer from Switzerland working for the U.S. Navy. Richard later established the American headquarters of Sulzer Brothers, a Swiss industrial and manufacturing firm. They married in 1943 and soon moved to New Jersey, where they lived for many years in Mendham and Far Hills. After raising their four children, they moved to Lyme, N.H., and subsequently to Hanover. Richard passed away in 2007.

Johanne is remembered for her kindness to friends and her direct way of speaking her mind. Always elegant, she was an avid gardener, an excellent chef, and a skilled knitter. She loved watching tennis, especially if Roger Federer was playing. For many years she prepared and delivered meals to nearby families in need. She and Richard traveled often to visit their children and their European relatives.

Friends and family celebrated Johanne at a memorial dinner on Nov. 18. Donations in her memory may be made to Kendal at Hanover, which cares for the elderly with skill and compassion: https://kah.kendal.org/contact/donate/
