In the morning matchup against Coastal, played at the Derryfield School, Monadnock posted a dominant 4-0 win, followed by a 3-1 win over Lakes for the title.
Ethan Sweet (Stevens High) netted a pair of goals, while Graham Chickering (Lebanon) and Jake Acker (Hanover) also scored.
Pat Logan (Hanover) and Lebanon keepers Davis Cole and Erik Spaulding combined for two saves in the win, which secured first place for Monadnock following group play and a spot in the afternoon’s championship game against Lakes.
In a hard-fought title game, Monadnock hit the crossbar three different times before the game was five minutes old, before Sweet tapped in a Noah Spaulding (Stevens) goal-mouth pass for a 1-0 lead. Lakes answered with a Ryan Klesco goal at 19 minutes to even the game at-1, before Noah Spaulding wove his way to an unassisted goal at 30 minutes for a 2-1 Monadnock halftime lead.
Several acrobatics second-half saves by Lakes’ keeper Jon LeClair kept things close until 11 minutes remained, when Tucker Stegner (Mascoma) was taken down in the box for a penalty. Noah Spaulding buried the spot kick to account for the 3-1 final. Logan made three first-half saves, and Cole one in the second half in the Monadnock goal.
The back four of Carter Adams (Lebanon), Sam Pych (Hanover), Henry Kahl (Hanover) and Noah Didehbani (Lebanon) was air-tight throughout the event, allowing only a single goal over the course of four games (the other goal conceded by Monadnock was an own goal on a 20 yard back pass in Thursday’s 9-1 win over Lakes). In defending its crown, Monadnock scored 24 goals over four games while allowing just two.
