Local Roundup: Dartmouth Women’s Hoop Opens With Victory

Hanover — Isalys “Ice” Quinones had 11 points and 12 rebounds as the Dartmouth College women’s basketball team defeated Central Connecticut State, 61-51, on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Fanni Szabo led the Big Green with 16 points — including an 8-for-8 effort from the free-throw line — and teammate Emily Dryden added a career-high 14 points. Dartmouth led at halftime, 30-28.

As a team, the Big Green shot 22-of-60 from the field and 61.9 percent from the free-throw line.

In a tight contest, the Big Green took the lead for good with four minutes to play in the third quarter. With 2:41 to play in the third, Szabo’s 3-pointer gave Dartmouth a 45-40 lead.

Central Connecticut’s Aleah Epps had game highs of 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Dartmouth will travel to Vermont on Sunday.

Men’s Basketball Rhode Island 84, Dartmouth 60

Kingston, r.i. (ap) — E.C. Matthews scored 21 points while Hassan Martin and Jared Terrell added 12 points each to help No. 23 Rhode Island beat Dartmouth in the season opener for both teams.

Matthews missed all but the first 10 minutes of last season because of a torn ACL in his right knee.

The Rams’ man-to-man defense forced Dartmouth into 20 turnovers which Rhode Island converted into 26 points. The Rams also had a 43-36 rebounding advantage.

Evan Boudreax scored 14 points and Guillen Smith added 13 for the Big Green, which shot 35.2 percent (19-for-54) from the field.

First-year Dartmouth head coach Dave McLaughlin inherits a team that was 10-18 last season and includes six freshmen on its roster.

Men’s Hockey Quinnipiac 6, Dartmouth 3

Hamden, Conn. — Landon Smith’s third-period hat trick was the difference as No. 7 Quinnipiac (6-3-1, 2-1-0 ECAC Hockey) handed Dartmouth (2-1-1, 1-1-1) its first defeat of the season.

Dartmouth goalie Devin Buffalo finished with a career-high 48 saves.

The Big Green’s Kevan Kilistoff and John Ernsting scored first-period goals to send the visitors to the locker room with a 2-1 lead. Quinnipiac’s Tim Clifton and Bo Pieper scored to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead after two periods.

Big Green freshman Cam Strong netted his second goal of the season in the third, but it wasn’t enough as QU pulled away on the strength of Smith’s hat trick.

Dartmouth freshman Will Graber had a pair of assists, as did sophomore Alex Jasiek before his night ended early in the second period thanks to a major and a game misconduct.

Quinnipiac was 3-for-9 on the power play, while Dartmouth was 0-for-8.

Cross Country Dartmouth Men Third at NCAA Regional

New York — The Big Green’s third-place team finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park opened the potential for an at-large berth to the national race later this month.

Dartmouth posted 108 points, beating perennial power Providence by one. Syracuse (29) and Iona (65) claimed the top two spots.

Dartmouth put four runners in the top 25, led by senior Daniel Salas’ 12th-place finish in 30 minutes, 48 seconds, over a longer-than-usual 10-kilometer course.

The Dartmouth women were fourth in their regional, as Helen Schlachtenhaufen placed 12th over six kilometers (20:53) and teammate claimed 19th (21:06).

Women’s Volleyball Dartmouth 3, Brown 2

Hanover — The Big Green rallied from a two-set deficit for a 17-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16, 15-12 defeat of the Bears at Leede Arena.

With the victory, the Big Green improved to 9-15 overall and 2-11 in Ivy League play, while the Bears dropped to 5-18 and 3-10.

Senior Emily Astarita and sophomore Zoe Leonard ended the night with double-doubles. Astarita had 18 digs and 11 kills, and Leonard recorded 22 assists and 16 digs.

Dartmouth hosts Yale for senior day at 5 p.m.
