West Fairlee — Thetford town officials say the incident on a public beach on Lake Fairlee that led to the near-drowning of a boy is the subject of an investigation by the Vermont State Police.

On Friday, Thetford Selectboard Chairman Stuart Rogers and Thetford Police Chief Michael Evans released a statement conveying comments from the family of the boy, in which the family said the boy was “in the intensive care unit, and we now know he will not survive.”

“Any incident like this triggers an investigation,” said Rogers, referring to an event that resulted in a 911 call being placed on Tuesday night from Treasure Island, a public beach that Thetford owns in the town of West Fairlee.

The beach was closed on Wednesday to allow for the replacement of pads on the defibrillator at Treasure Island, according to Rogers.

The 911 call was placed shortly after 9 p.m.; the town employs lifeguards until 5 p.m., and signage at the beach notifies the public that the beach is closed beginning at 8 p.m.

Rogers said on Saturday he had not received any updates from the family related to the status of the boy, who he clarified was a minor.

He also clarified an earlier statement about whether there was an ongoing police investigation — there is no investigation by the Thetford Police Department, but because the incident happened in the town of West Fairlee, it falls under the jurisdiction of the state police.

Attempts to reach Vermont State Police officials for comment on Saturday were not successful.
