The Hanover High girls and boys cross country teams continued their dominance of the NHIAA Division II cross country championships on Saturday at Derryfield Park in Manchester, with the boys winning their fourth straight title and the girls their third straight and fourth in the last five years.

The Hanover girls placed seven runners in the top 14, led by senior Aria Deeb in second place (19:17.5) behind Lebanon freshman Jill Campbell, whose winning time of 18:28.9 was the second-fastest across all divisions on the day. The Raiders finished third among 14 teams.

Senior Ben Groves led the Hanover boys, finishing the 5,000-meter race in 15 minutes, 58.5 seconds. Sophomore teammate Dylan Faris was second (16:25.1), junior Isaac McNaughton fourth (16:31.9) and freshman Teddy White in seventh (16:36.9) dominated the 103-athlete contest.

The Hanover boys (29 points) topped Coe-Brown (45) for the fourth straight year. The Hanover girls (32) outscored Oyster River (59) for their honors.

Hanover coach Eric Picconi said the Bears anticipated tough challenges on the day, but they were more than equal to the task.

“The girls were determined to live up to expectations and went on to exceed them,” Picconi said in an email.

The Bears’ top girls, Deeb and senior Alice Bell (fourth, 19:54.0), got away with the fastest runners and settled into their pace up front with Lebanon’s Campbell.

“There were a handful of other runners before the H-train nabbed a long sequence of places and put the race out of reach for others,” Picconi said, calling it an “impressive group.”

That included freshman Edie Rojansky (seventh), junior Mia Sverrild (ninth), senior Ari Hirschler (10th), senior Grace Stewart (13th) and freshman Olive Hanissian (14th).

A strong Coe-Brown boys squad was expected to challenge Hanover, but Groves had his usual strong start and formed a solid front four with McNaughton, White and Faris that could not be matched, Picconi said

“Ben won the race (repeating his performance from last year),” Picconi said. “And with Alexander (Collins, 15th) Oliver (Collins 23rd) and Rohan (Novosad 24th) bookending the top 25, they claimed their fourth straight state championship.”

Behind Campbell for the Lebanon girls in the field of 93 runners were Carolyn Campbell (11th), Ollie Hanna (17th), Victoria Pomeroy (19th), Maeve Finnegan (30th) and Raeka Mikecz (31st). For the Lebanon boys, who finished fifth among 15 teams, Brent Paige was 27th with Alistair Smith (28th), Ian Kiefer (30th), Curran Pool (32nd) and Koen Christie (38th).

Meanwhile, the Mascoma girls had a big day in their Division III championship race, faking second place out of 31 schools and 13 teams.

The Royals were led by freshman Paige Ranney, who was seventh. Eighth grader Brooklyn Rice followed in 34th, joined by senior Isabella Currier (46th) and Grace King (52nd) among 113 runners.

For the boys, Mascoma’s Carl Russell was fourth, Karson Rogers 18th and Ransom Donigian 21st. Kellan Zullo of Newport was 51st among 148 runners. The Royals were sixth among 19 team scores with 34 schools competing.

Qualifying teams and athletes will head to the NHIAA Meet of Champions on Saturday, which will be held at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds for the first time.
