Voters in New Hampshire House District Sullivan 1 will choose between Democratic incumbent Brian Sullivan and Republican Joel T. Hutchins, both of Grantham, for one seat on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The Valley News sent a survey to both candidates about their experience, why they are running and what they see as the biggest issue facing the state. Hutchins did not respond. Sullivan’s answers, edited lightly for style, appear below.

Sullivan, a former science teacher, names affordability as the biggest issue. He says the state has shifted too many costs to local governments. Hutchins did not return the questionnaire.

Democrat · NH House Sullivan 1

68, Democrat, Grantham

Political experience: State representative for nine years.

Professional experience: Science teacher, 10 years; teacher advocate for NEA-New Hampshire, 25 years.

Community service: Have worked to support constituents in a variety of ways.

Why are you running? Make life more affordable for the people of New Hampshire. Support strong public schools. Work to protect democracy and fair elections.

Biggest issue: Making life more affordable for Granite Staters. Reverse the downshifting of costs from the state level to local government. I am sponsoring a bill to require state government to pick up a portion of public sector retirement costs, as was the practice until about 10 years ago.
