Voters in New Hampshire House District 18 will choose between Democrat Marko Kloos of Enfield and Republican incumbent Donald McFarlane of Orange for one seat on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The Valley News asked the candidates in a survey about their experience, why they are running and what they see as the biggest issue facing the state. Kloos’ answers, edited lightly for style, appear below.

Kloos, a novelist running for office for the first time, names housing costs as the biggest issue and calls for tax incentives and zoning changes. McFarlane did not return the questionnaire.

54, Democrat, Enfield

Political experience: This is my first run for public office.

Professional experience: I am a novelist, and I’ve worked as a full-time author for the last 15 years.

Community service: I am a volunteer student career adviser for local schools and VLACS, the New Hampshire virtual charter school.

Why are you running? I want to take part in making our beautiful home state an even better place to live, work and raise families.

Biggest issue: Our biggest issue is the cost of housing. I would start to address it with a combination of tax incentives and zoning law changes to favor single-family units and residential developments.
