An unsurprising ‘October surprise’
Over the years, we’ve sometimes seen, in the month leading up to an important election, an “October surprise” — some unexpected event that has the power to sway voters. Leave it to the Trump administration to pioneer the phenomenon of the “October predictable.”
Today, Homeland Security agents raided the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar, Democrat of Minnesota and frequent Trump target. As an American who is a woman of color, with opinions different from his and hailing from one of this president’s “shithole countries,” Omar has borne the brunt of Trump’s ire for years. Despite his attacks, she has bravely continued to speak out, working on behalf of her constituents and on behalf of democracy.
If only this president and his administration would focus on doing the hard work of governing rather than wasting resources by engaging in dangerous and baseless attacks — on individuals and on our very rights and liberties.
