Taxing “second homes” or “the rich?”
Regarding Carley Berlin’s article from VTDigger republished in the Valley News Sept. 30. I am a Vermonter. I inherited my “second home” and rent it to a 91-year old tenant at an affordable rent. She’s a good caretaker of the family place, so I factor that pleasant circumstance into the reduced rent. I live in my own house nearby, retired and on a fixed income.
According to Berlin’s story, “70% of Democratic-leaning poll respondents said they supported a new second home tax…” So in our one-party state this means that I am squarely in the crosshairs of this misguided, but widely popular campaign promise.
I hope the second-home tax promise evaporates after the election cycle, but I fear it will not.
