HAVERHILL — Along with 21-year-old Jayden McClanahan, a grand jury indicted a 24-year-old Connecticut man in connection with a Nelson Street robbery-turned-homicide in the spring.
Originally, McClanahan, of Hartford, Connecticut, was the only suspect named in court records. A grand jury indicted him in July for felonious use of a firearm, conspiracy to commit burglary and burglary.
But in September, Grafton Superior Court returned indictments on stronger charges for McClanahan: first-degree murder/robbery and reckless second-degree murder.
A grand jury also indicted Carlington Green Jr., of Bloomfield, Connecticut, for his alleged involvement.
On April 20, McClanahan and Green are alleged to have unlawfully entered 14 Nelson Street through a fire escape for the purpose of committing burglary, court records indicate.
The first indictment found that McClanahan, C.G. — referring to Green — and/or others shot one male occupant of Apartment 2, killing him. Then, they shot a second male occupant, injuring him, according to the indictment.
Police identified the deceased male occupant as 22-year-old Demetrius White, according to an April 24 news release. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that White’s cause of death was a gunshot wound of the chest and abdomen, and that his manner of death was homicide.
McClanahan’s earlier indictment does not clarify what role each person is suspected to have played, but the more recent charges are illuminating.
McClanahan’s indictment included first-degree murder/robbery and reckless second-degree murder. His probable cause statement filed back in May remains sealed.
A grand jury also issued a direct indictment for Green on first-degree murder/robbery; reckless second-degree murder; burglary using a firearm; burglary, felon in possession of dangerous weapon; and felonious use of firearm.
The murder charges, which violate RSA 630: 1, carry possible life sentences for McClanahan and Green.
Michael Garrity, director of communications with the New Hampshire Department of Justice, did not respond by deadline to a Monday inquiry about possible charges against other suspects.
McClanahan is currently incarcerated at Grafton County Correctional Facility, but has requested a bail hearing. Public defender Renee Sargent did not respond by deadline to a Monday phone call, nor did prosecuting attorney Benjamin Agati with the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office.
As for Green, Jonathan Frizzell approved a warrant for his arrest on Sept. 26. He had not been assigned an attorney as of Monday.
The defendants both have 9 a.m. arraignments on Oct. 13 at Grafton Superior Court.
