Enfield, NH – Joseph F. Stumpf Jr., 88, of Enfield, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, at the Jack Byrne Center following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on August 17, 1937, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Joe was the son of the late Joseph F. Stumpf Sr. and Mary (Adametz) Stumpf. He graduated from Metuchen High School in 1955 and went on to serve his country in the United States Navy.
After his time in the Navy, Joe began a career as a firefighter in Edison NJ, a profession that reflected the kind of man he was-strong, dependable, hardworking, and always willing to help others. After moving to New Hampshire, he continued his service with the Hanover Fire Department. Throughout his working years, Joe also worked in the auto parts industry, owned and operated J&D Auto in West Lebanon, NH, worked for Voortman Cookie as a distributor.
Joe had many interests and passions throughout his life. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 22 and BPOE in Lebanon, NH. He loved hunting, fishing, auto racing, and cheering on his beloved Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. But more than anything, Joe loved his family.
At the center of Joe’s world was his wife, Debra. Their love was the foundation of his life, and those who knew them could see how deeply he loved her. He was devoted to Deb and wanted nothing more than for her to be happy. He cherished the life they built together and the family they shared.
Joe was also a deeply loving and devoted father. He loved his children dearly and was always there to support them, encourage them, and stand beside them through every chapter of their lives. Whether they needed advice, a helping hand, someone to listen, or simply knew they needed their dad, Joe was there. His children knew they could count on him, and his love and support were constants they carried with them throughout their lives. Being a father was a role he took great pride in, and his children knew without a doubt how much they meant to him.
His grandchildren held an especially precious place in Joe’s heart. He took tremendous pride in each of them and loved spending time with them, watching them grow, and being a part of their lives. The love he had for his grandchildren was unmistakable. He treasured the moments he shared with them, and they will carry those memories-and his love-with them forever.
Joe will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, loyal friend, and a man who stood up for the people he loved. He gave so much of himself to his family and to the communities he served, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra Stumpf of Enfield, NH; his son, John Stumpf of Fort Pierce, FL; his stepdaughter, Shelby Day (Aaron) of Lebanon, NH; his brother, Robert Stumpf (Mary Ann) of Somerset, NJ; his niece, Denise Latanzio (Alan) of Ringoes, NJ; his great-nephews, Alan Latanzio and Austin Latanzio of Ringoes, NJ; his grandchildren, Brandon Gile, Zack Wallace, Hannah Gile, Avery Wallace Smith (Austin), Sarah Gile, and Mason Day; and many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph F. Stumpf Sr. and Mary (Adametz); his daughter, Donna Stumpf of Enfield, NH; his sister, Joanne Wright of Manchester, NJ; his brother-in-law, Wayne Wright of Manchester, NJ; and his step-son Shane Gile of Winchester, NH.
A private graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Enfield, New Hampshire, and a celebration of Joe’s life at a later date.
