With the Dartmouth College women’s soccer team set to see its first regular-season action on Thursday, two athletes are being recognized before the debut kickoff.
The Intercollegiate Women’s Soccer Organization for Coaches and United Soccer Coaches released its NCAA Division I women’s players to watch list recently, and Big Green junior Stephanie Lathrop is among on it.
Lathrop is coming off a season in which she led the Ivy League in goals (nine) and was clutch in the postseason, scoring the winning goals in the semifinals and finals of the Ivy League tournament, which the Big Green won for the first time in program history.
Joining her on the list is sophomore defender Anna Leschly, who was last year’s Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Additionally, Leschly made Top Drawer Soccer’s Women’s College Preseason Top 100.
The Big Green’s season opener on Thursday against UMass Lowell is slated for 6 p.m. at Whitey Burnham Field.
Sailing adds an assistant coach
Rebecca McElvain, who was named the permanent head coach of Dartmouth sailing in June after an interim period in charge, has added Arrieta Angueira Salbidegoitia to her staff as an assistant coach.
Angueira Salbidegoitia most recently competed for George Washington University, where she was a captain and varsity skipper and appeared in four ICSA Women’s Fleet Race National Championship finals.
The Big Green’s new assistant will walk into a program that finished fifth at the ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championship and 12th in the ICSA Women’s Fleet Race National Championship, both of which occurred in May.
New staffer for women’s volleyball
Brian Modzelesky has been tabbed as a new addition to the Dartmouth women’s volleyball coaching staff. Modzelesky previously worked at Front Range Volleyball Club in Colorado as the program director for boys.
Front Range Volleyball Club “invests in cutting-edge training, advanced equipment, video analysis and instruction from top coaches to support athletes and their families throughout their volleyball journey,” according to its website.
The Big Green are coming off a season in which they finished 7-17 overall and 4-10 in conference play. Those seven wins were the fewest for the program since it went 2-22 in 2012.
Dartmouth opens the season at the Buffalo/Canisius Invitational in Amherst, N.Y., on Sept. 4.
Men’s lacrosse welcomes new member of coaching staff
Parker Fairey, who most recently was an assistant coach at Boston University, working with goalies among other responsibilities, has been added to the Big Green men’s lacrosse program’s staff.
Fairey’s past experience includes serving as the director of lacrosse at Milton High School in Georgia. He also played goalie for Montana State University.
“An expert communicator and teacher, Parker will work directly with our goalies and face-off men and quarterback our substitution strategy,” men’s lacrosse head coach Sean Kirwan said in a news release. “I am very excited to get Parker around our staff and players as we look to take more steps towards our championship aspirations and goals.”
The Big Green finished 4-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play last season.
Softball staff adds a new face
Hillary Smith, hired in July, has begun building her softball coaching staff, adding Xen Penny as an assistant.
Penny was previously a hitting coach at Quinnipiac University, where Smith most recently served as the head coach. Penny was a hitting coach in the Arizona Diamondbacks minor league system prior to his time with the Bobcats.
“I am thankful for Coach Smith believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I am so excited to be at such a prestigious place. The future is bright,” Penny said in a news release from the college.
Dartmouth finished 10-23 overall last season. It was also 7-13 in conference play. The 10 overall wins — when excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 and 2021 seasons — were the fewest for the program since 2005, when it also had 10 wins.
Men’s heavyweight rowing hires new assistant
John Lindberg, who has served as an assistant coach, recruiting coordinator and interim head coach of the Harvard-Radcliffe rowing program, is joining the Big Green as an assistant coach.
Additionally, Lindberg previously served as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for Boston University’s men’s program. He also had a stint coaching at Northeastern.
“I could not be more pleased to be joining such a terrific boathouse. The Friends of Dartmouth Rowing Boathouse is a purposeful, joyful and welcoming place,” Lindberg said in a news release.
