Vershire, VT – Philip J. Johnson, 83 died Saturday, July 25, 2026 at his home in Vershire, VT.
He was born December 26, 1942 in West Fairlee, VT, the son of Philip G. and Pearl R. (Bailey) Johnson.
He attended school in West Fairlee, Vershire and later Thetford Academy. On January 23, 1960 he married Carol Coburn of Strafford, VT. Over the years they lived in Groton, Fairlee, and West Fairlee, before settling in Vershire.
Philip had worked for the State of Vermont Highway Dept., Adirondack Bottled Gas in Fairlee, VT, did logging for himself and worked 6 years at Dartmouth College in the Building and Grounds Dept. His favorite job was running Snowfields Farm Apple Orchard in Vershire for over 25 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. In his earlier years he was a race car driver at Idle Pines Speedway in Wentworth, NH. He was a member of the Upper Valley Snow Packers Snowmobile Club.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Carol Johnson, two sons, Jeffrey Johnson and Richard J. Johnson all of Vershire, VT; a daughter, Penny Hardy of Norwich, VT; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Arvilla Towle and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson, Torrey Philip Fifield and a brother, Richard Johnson.
There will be a graveside funeral service held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 2pm at the Post Mills Cemetery in Post Mills, VT.
