LEBANON — Police responded to Eastman Hill Road for rollover crash involving a dump truck that was towing a wood chipper on Wednesday morning.

The preliminary investigation indicates the dump truck, which was carrying a load of wood chips, experienced a mechanical issue that ultimately resulted in the vehicle rolling over, Lebanon Police said in a press release.

In an interview, the truck’s operator said just as he reached the crest of a steep section of Eastman Hill Road, the truck lost power and began to roll backward. Baron Johnson, co-owner of JPS Property Services of Chelsea, said he intentionally steered the truck to the shoulder before he lost control.

“You just got to take your medicine, offload it quick and try to minimize damage and any risk to anybody else,” said Johnson, who used to drive propane truck and was used to having a contingency plan.

Johnson said the truck rolled backward about 100 feet before he maneuvered it to off the road. He said he did not expect the truck to tip over, but a deep culvert just off the shoulder made it inevitable.

Johnson was not injured, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Lebanon Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
