Lebanon, NH – Peter Hoyle Armstrong passed away on June 6, 2026. Peter was a long-time, faithful communicant at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, 9 W Wheelock Street. Hanover, NH which will hold a service and a reception to remember him at 11 AM, Wednesday, 24 June. As he would have wanted, the service will be Rite 1 which, spoken in Elizabethan English, offers praise and thanksgiving and emphasizes the Eucharist as a joyful celebration of resurrection. All who knew him are invited to attend the service, followed by the reception where attendees will be encouraged to share remembrances.
An “Army brat” born at Fort Ethan Allen Vermont, teen-aged Peter left his brother Alan and his parents in Tokyo, Japan to attend two Quaker-based schools: Moses Brown Preparatory School in Providence, R.I. and Haverford College in Haverford, PA with a hiatus in the U.S. Army serving as a cryptographer in Vicenza Italy. His many leaves of service as a junior enlisted man found him all over Europe as a houseguest of countless senior officers who were friends of our family.
Peter found his niche at Dartmouth College where he served brilliantly for more than three decades as the assistant dean of faculty overseeing more than 40 off-campus programs attended by 55-60% of students during their time in school.
Residing for more than a half-century in Hanover and Lebanon, Peter ardently supported the North County Community Theater, the Lebanon Opera House, Opera North and the Winthrop Bean Scholarship fund for promising young actors. He routinely gave much of his wealth to his church, to the support of miliary veterans and to dozens of conservation groups.
Peter’s many friends can best remember and honor him by making a donation to a charitable organization of their choice. Nothing would have pleased him more. Condolences can be left at www.rickerfuneralhome.com.
