WHITE RIVER JUNCTION โ€” A hearing for a man involved in what police have described as a botched robbery that resulted in fatal shooting in Hartford last summer was rescheduled on Monday, just hours before it was to occur.

Jeffrey Mullinsโ€™ pre-sentence investigation is now slated to be completed by July 25, Windsor Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Mann wrote in a court filing approving the stateโ€™s motion to cancel Mondayโ€™s status conference.ย

A pre-sentence investigation culminates in a report prepared by a probation officer detailing a defendantโ€™s criminal history to assist a judge in final sentencing.

Mullins, 46, of Rindge, N.H., is awaiting sentencing after signing a plea agreement with prosecutors in November 2025. He agreed to plead guilty to one felony count of accessory to attempted assault and robbery in connection with the August 2025 incident in Hartford that resulted in the death of David Labrecque, 65, of Canaan, who was shot and killed outside a home on Verna Court.

Jordan Handy, Mullinsโ€™ attorney in the Vermont case, declined to comment when reached by phone on Tuesday. He deferred questions on Monday’s cancellation to the prosecutor in the case, Franklin Paulino, of the Windsor County Attorney’s Office.ย

In a motion filed in Windsor Superior Court on Monday morning, Paulino sought the continuation of the status conference after learning that Mullins will be in jail until July.

Mullins, who is incarcerated in Grafton County Jail, โ€œwill serve 120 days and he had 36 days credit, which makes his expected release date July 15, 2026, where he will be on New Hampshire probation,โ€ the stateโ€™s motion says.ย

A voice message left for Paulino was not immediately returned on Tuesday.ย

Two years before the attempted robbery in Hartford, Mullins received a sentence of 12 months in Grafton County Jail on a misdemeanor conviction of criminal trespass, which was deferred for two years on the condition of good behavior.ย In November 2025, when Mullins pleaded guilty to accessory to attempted assault and robbery in the Vermont case, he violated conditions of requiring to be of good behavior stipulated in his New Hampshire sentence, court records show.ย ย

As a result, in April, the court sentenced Mullins to serve six months of the previously deferred Grafton County jail sentence, with the remaining six months suspended for two years from sentencing.ย

At the time of his death last August, Labrecque was coming to the aid of his girlfriend, Jessica Lemay, 37, also of Canaan, who also was shot that morning, she later told police.

Mullins was arrested last August along with Michelle Mullins, 49, also of Rindge, N.H., and the alleged gunman, Demetrius Drew, 31, of New Haven, Conn. The affidavit in support of the charges stated that the Mullinses had previously lived in Enfield.

Drew has entered not guilty pleas to charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and attempted assault and robbery with a weapon.

The case against Drew is expected to be ready for trial in February of next year, according to court records.

Both Mullinses pleaded not guilty to felony charges of aiding in the commission of first-degree murder and accessory to attempted assault and robbery.

It was the latter charge to which Jeffrey Mullins agreed to plead guilty in November 2025. The plea agreement calls for a sentence of six to 10 years with all but six months suspended and 10 years of probation, court records show.

Michelle Mullins has a change of plea hearing scheduled for June. That hearing also was originally set to be held on Monday, but it was rescheduled last week.ย

Her attorney, David Sleigh, was not immediately available for comment on Tuesday.
