I love Vermonters

I’m moving to a suburb, after living on our beautiful farm for 38 years. I had to empty our huge barn, full of stuff from our 5 kids’ stashes, books from various jobs, schools, 100 tires, and surprise leftovers from the previous owners. It was a mountain!

I put ads up for free stuff, and responses were awesome; people came for one thing and took 20. Everyone found something they could use, build, create and salvage for a project or an obsession — a vintage cast iron stove, dresser, doors, old VHS and CDs, wood, baseball caps, tools, a sign “Disaster Zone”, a flatbed full of metal, bee equipment, milk jugs, each putting a big smile on their faces. Recycling and repurposing cleaned out the barn over two months work! I just collected the last of the litter on the ground. I made new friends, was gifted with fresh organic eggs and labor.

I will miss this place and these earthy, decent people. Driving to our new rental in the suburbs of Massachusetts, I arrived and found myself looking for uninhabited land, which I could not find. I will miss my farm, the woods, the pastures, the pond, but mostly the generous, wise people of Vermont.
