Strafford, VT – Gregory John McHugo, 77, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, with his family by his side. A person of deep thought and quick wit, Greg’s life was anchored in the Vermont soil and a lifelong devotion to his family.
Born in Barre on November 24, 1948, to John and Patricia Bixby McHugo, Greg was raised in Barre and Burlington, graduating from Rice Memorial High School in 1966 and the University of Vermont in 1970. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood, Texas before earning his PhD in Psychology from Dartmouth College in 1980. Greg enjoyed a distinguished career as a Research Professor at the Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary E. Conrad; his children, Megan M. Morrison, Ryan G. McHugo, and Clover C. McHugo; his grandchildren, Charlotte, Adaline, Lucas, Shannon, Dylan, and step-grandson Brandon; his sister, Nancy P. McHugo; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Greg taught his family that one could be a serious scientist while still making a room erupt in laughter with a spot-on Donald Duck impression. He will be deeply missed and remembered with great love.
A celebration of his life will be held in the early summer. For a full obituary see rand-wilson.com
