For the third straight season, the Dartmouth menโs hockey team is headed to the semifinals of the ECAC tournament, after sweeping Colgate in a best-of-three quarterfinal series at Thompson Arena over the weekend.
While game one on Friday did not start great for the Big Green, it ended well. After falling behind 1-0 early, Dartmouth scored four unanswered goals over the course of the rest of the game to pick up a 4-1 win.
Hank Cleaves led the Big Green in the scoring department with two goals, while Ryan Schelling and Hayden Stavroff each added a goal of their own. CJ Foley, who had two assists in the contest, was named ECAC Defender of the Week for his efforts.
Dartmouth completed the sweep on Saturday, winning again 4-1. This time, the Big Green did not let Colgate get the jump on them, taking a 2-0 lead on goals from Jack Silverberg and Nathan Morin.
The Raiders did pull within one goal in the second period, but Cleaves put the Big Green up 3-1 early in the third period. Cam MacDonald eventually scored an empty-netter to put the game on ice.
Dartmouth faces off with Clarkson in the ECAC Tournament semifinals Friday at 4 p.m. in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Menโs hockey raking in the awards
Leading up to their ECAC quarterfinal win, the Big Green received multiple recognitions for the season theyโve had.
Hayden Stavroff was named the Ivy League Player of the Year and was named First Team All-Ivy. Hank Cleaves was also named to the First Team.
Additionally, Emmett Croteau and CJ Foley received Second Team All-Ivy honors, while Cam MacDonald was named to the Academic All-Ivy team.
The Big Green also picked up ECAC honors as Stavroff was named First Team All-ECAC. Cleaves and Croteau made the Second Team, and Foley was named to the Third Team.
The players were not the only ones to be recognized. For the second straight season, Head Coach Reid Cashman and his staff were named the Ivy League Coaching Staff of the Year.
Skiing competes at NCAA Championship
The Big Green headed to Utah last week for the NCAA Championship and finished sixth overall. In addition to the sixth-place finish, multiple Dartmouth athletes had standout performances.
On the first day of competition, which featured the giant slalom event, Oscar Zimmer (1:56.24) finished fifth overall for the men, earning himself First Team All-American honors. As for the women, Carly Elsinger (2:06.72) finished ninth overall, which got her Second Team All-American recognition.
On day two, athletes competed in the 7.5K classic interval start, which John Steel Hagenbuch (18:25.3) won for the men. Hagenbuch earned First Team All-American honors for his efforts. Ava Thurston (26:35.5) led the Big Green women, finishing eighth, gaining Second Team All-American recognition.
The Big Green picked up another event win on day three as Zimmer (1:33.77) won the menโs slalom and earned First Team All-American honors. Emma Resnick (1:37.60) led the Dartmouth women in this discipline, finishing 13th.ย
The championship wrapped up on Saturday with the 20K freestyle. Hagenbuch (46:15) was the runner-up for the men, while Thurston (52:22.9) finished fourth. Both earned First-Team All-American status for their efforts.
Womenโs basketball athlete receives Ivy academic nod
Nina Minicozzi, who averaged 6.8 points per game for the Big Green this season, was named to the Academic All-Ivy team. She was one of eight players from the conference to receive the honor.
Football has new staff additions
Jordan Belfiori, who was most recently at Butler, is one of the new assistant coaches who will work with the defense and linebackers.
Todd Gilcrist, who most recently coached at Averett, will be on the offensive side of the ball with a focus on the wide receivers.
Finally, Quentin Jones, who comes to the Big Green by way of Wesleyan, will be Dartmouthโs defensive line coach.
Menโs hoops athletes earn Ivy awards
Brandon Mitchell-Day, who nearly averaged a double-double with 12.1 points and nine rebounds per game, was named an All-Ivy Honorable Mention. Jackson Munro, who averaged 7.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, received Academic All-Ivy honors.
Menโs lacrosse picks up win in latest contest
The Big Green battled Fairfield on the road last Tuesday and came out victorious, 16-10. Thomas Power was electric in the win, leading Dartmouth offensively with seven goals.
Alex Jessey added two goals, while Tyler Juhlin, Mitchell Monte, Nick Moore, William Stahl, Stu Gates, Jackson Monte and Emmett Paradine each scored once.ย
Dartmouth is now 4-2 overall and opens Ivy League play on the road against Harvard on Friday at 7 p.m.
Womenโs lacrosse drops second game in a row
After starting the season 5-0, the Big Green have hit a road bump, losing their second consecutive game last Tuesday at home against UMass, 17-14.
Madeline Egan, Catherine Erb and Charlotte Myers led Dartmouth in scoring, with three goals each. Katie Barr scored twice, while Samantha Bennett, Lauren Riley, and Emma Goodwin each had one goal.ย
Dartmouth, now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play, will aim to get back on track on Saturday when it hits the road to face Florida at noon.
