WINDSOR โ€” The Selectboard announced Ryan Palmer’s resignation from the board at a meeting earlier this month.ย

Palmer, the Windsor County Sheriff whose law enforcement credentials were suspended earlier this month by the Vermont Criminal Justice Council amid multiple sexual misconduct charges, had served on the Selectboard since 2021.

Palmer sent his resignation by email to Windsor Town Clerk Riley White and Selectboard Vice Chair Jeffrey Johnson on Jan. 29, a day after he pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of sexual misconduct in Rutland Superior Court.ย

โ€œIt has been my honor to serve the Town of Windsor as an elected member of the Selectboard and I will be forever grateful for that opportunity,โ€ he wrote. โ€œHowever it is in the best interest of the Town that I resign from the board.โ€

โ€œI am doing so immediately,โ€ he added.

His resignation was an agenda item for the Feb. 11 Windsor Selectboard meeting, where his resignation was announced.ย

Tera Howard, chair of the Selectboard, stated in a recording of the Feb. 11 meeting that the townโ€™s โ€œfocus now is moving forward and continuing to serve the town of Windsor with professionalism, transparency, and integrity.โ€

The Selectboard โ€œwill be choosing someone to fill this vacancy for the remaining 11 months, and we are accepting letters of interest to one or all members of the Selectboard,โ€ she said.ย

The deadline for the letters is Feb. 24, she said.

Palmer continues to hold the elected position of sheriff, but has given over leadership of day-to-day operations to Claude Weyant, a former Windsor County Sheriff’s Department captain.
