John L. Blake

West Fairlee, VT – John L. Blake, 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. In a testament to his deep roots in the community, John entered into rest in the very same house where he was born.

Born on August 11, 1951, in West Fairlee, Vermont, he was the son of the late Gordon Blake and Phyllis (Jollata) Blake. A lifelong resident of the area, John was a graduate of the Thetford Academy Class of 1970.

On September 21, 1974, he married Mary-Ellen Fay in West Fairlee. Together, they built a life centered on hard work and family, celebrating 51 years of marriage prior to his passing.

John was known for his strong work ethic throughout his life. In his early years, he worked in the maintenance department at Quechee Lakes. He spent many years driving a milk truck for Barrup Farms and later drove the mail truck for J.E. Nelson. Eventually, John transitioned from employee to business partner, proudly establishing J & J Blake Excavation alongside his son, Jonathan.

A true Vermonter, John found his greatest joy outdoors. He loved farming, spending hours working on his tractors, and taking meticulous care of his property. Above all, he cherished the time spent with his family, especially the time he spent with Jack, fooling around with tractors and haying.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary-Ellen Blake of West Fairlee, VT; his two sons, Jonathan Blake and his wife Gloria of West Fairlee, VT, and Robert Blake of Fairlee, VT; and his beloved grandchildren, Kailey and Jackson. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly. He is predeceased by his parents and older brother, James Blake.

A burial service will be held in the spring at the Post Mills Cemetery.
