The Hanover High girls cross country team continued its stellar season on Friday, taking the top three places and winning the Connecticut Valley Cross Country Championships.

The Bears’ Megan Faris won the 5K meter race in a time of 18:50 followed by Lila Muirhead in second and Millie Larrick third. Also in the top ten for Hanover were Ari Hirschler (6th), Matilda Munroe (8th) and Mary Westrich (10th). Other finishes among Upper Valley teams in the field of 55 included Natalie Ranney, Windsor (9th), Anna Hanna, Lebanon (11th), Madeline Piecuch, Thetford (16th) and Chloe Coleman, Newport (49th),

The Hanover boys were edged in the team competition by Keene with Ben Groves finishing second behind winner Sullivan Sturtz of Keene who won 5K race in a time of 16:02. In the top 10 for Hanover were Alexander Collins (3rd), Dylan Faris (8th), Oliver Collins (9th) and Ben Hourdequin (10th). for Thetford, Ollie Emery was 14th, Wendell Durham 20th, Zac Amber 23rd and Peter Horan 26th. Brent Paige of Lebanon finished 19th, and teammates Alstair Smith was 21st and Curran Pool 27th. Michael Bohn of Newport was 31st just ahead of teammate Bryce Palmer (32nd) in the field of 73 runners.

“The girls team performed really well with a number of racers stepping up like Ari Hirchler, Matilda (Munroe) and Mary (Westrich) on top of Megan’s course record performance and Millie (Larrick) and Lila (Muirhead) tucked in in right behind her,” said Hanover coach Eric Piconni. “The boys did their very best against a Keene squad looking to level the playing field after last week at Cheshire Fairgrounds (meet won by Hanover). The math went back and forth and the Keene boys edged them in the end.”

Thetford coach Joe Deffner praised the boys finish behind Hanover and Keene and a “breakout race” for Piecuch on the girls side.

“While the girls were fourth out of four complete teams on the girls’ side, they continue to make really good progress and four of our girls were not racing that day,” Deffner said.
