We don’t care. Greed, cruelty, corruption, revenge, incompetence, lies. On view every day in the Trump Administration and promoted by Fox News. Many of us just don’t care. We have been convinced by corporate advertising and by “influencers” that pleasure, having things, getting attention and “getting back” at people with whom we disagree are the important things in life. They will make us happy and feel good.
Having stuff and fun are more valuable than leading a moral, compassionate and ethical life. Our media are constantly telling us we should buy things that will bring us pleasure and prestige. I guess we don’t care as long as we have our large screen TVs, cheap fast fashion, a cupboard full of unhealthy snack food and the satisfaction of humiliating our “enemies.”
I haven’t heard the question, “What would Jesus do?” in a long time — not even from people who claim to be good Christians. The perspective of a person acknowledged to be one of the most moral and compassionate persons in history is still a good guide.
