NEWBURY, Vt. โ Police had to use a boat on Sunday to apprehend a 45-year-old man who they said spent hours in the Connecticut River trying to avoid arrest.
The man, who police described as a transient, was wanted in New Hampshire on a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Vermont State Police said in a Monday news release.
On Sunday at 12:18 p.m., troopers responded to US Route 5 in Newbury for a report of a person in the area who was known to be wanted by police
They found the individual on the bank of the river and he jumped in when troopers attempted to take him into custody, the release said.
The man swam downstream between New Hampshire and Vermont for several hours as law enforcement officers from both states created a perimeter along the river.
Ultimately, members of the New Hampshire State Police, Haverhill Police Department and New Hampshire Fish and Game used a boat to take the man into custody.
