Hanover girls win U-32 Invitational

With five runners finishing in the top 10, the Hanover girls won the U-32 Invitational on Saturday among 15 teams.

Aria Deeb of Hanover was second in the 5,000-meter race, just 5 seconds behind winner Desi Broadley of Green Mountain (19:13). Alice Bell, Lila Marchetti and Grace Stewart were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, for Hanover. The Bearsโ€™ Ari Hirschler was ninth and Matilda Monroe was 18th in the field of 121 runners. Oxbowโ€™s Casey Wiedrick finished 34th.

The Hanover boys finished third among 19 teams with the Bearsโ€™ Isaac McNaughton coming in second among 146 runners in 16:27. Gregory Magnuson of BFA-Fairfax won the race in 16:02. Other results for the Bears included Dylan Faris (16th), Oliver Collins (19th), Rohan Novosad (25th), Miles Molina (32nd) and Jesse Bardach (33rd). Oxbowโ€™s Jake Danis was 43rd.

Hartfordโ€™s Johnson wins at Woodstock

Hartfordโ€™s Sylvia Johnson won the girls 5,000-meter race against 33 other runners at Fridayโ€™s Southern Vermont League meet hosted by Woodstock. Johnson clocked a victorious time of 22 minutes, 35 seconds.

In the boys race, with a field of 47 runners, Thetford took second, third, fourth and fifth individually behind Ollie Emery, Peter Horan, Zac Amber and Wendell Durham en route to the team victory.

Woodstock won the girls team competition, led by Mary Sluka (second), Aurora Hensel-Whalen (sixth), Aven Westbrook (seventh) and Ruth Stallard (11th). Anya Young of White River Valley was third, Natalie Ranney of Windsor fourth and Thetfordโ€™s Meredith Sloop and Madeline Piecuch took eighth and 10th, respectively.

Elijah Ofstad, (sixth) and Elliot Brooks (seventh) had the best finishes for Hartford, along with teammates Leo Snyder-Hamalainen (10th) and Scott McHenry (11th). For Claremont Christian Academy, John Henry Andrews was eighth and Charlie Mogavero ninth.

โ€œThe boys ran as a clump today, with Ollie Emery leading the way,โ€ said Thetford coach Joe Deffner. โ€œGoing second, third, fourth and fifth put us in a good spot to secure the win.

โ€œBrooke Wood and Lola Squire had breakout races today. Cecilia Huling and Annelies Currier continue to improve and are helping the team to gain ground,โ€ Deffner added. โ€œLots of positives on a difficult course.โ€
