In response to a recent Forum letter (“The hatred has to stop”; Sept. 15) from a reader who identifies herself as a Christian, a Republican, and a patriot, I (a Democrat, a patriot and a spiritual seeker whose religion is kindness) agree that we need to be universal in our condemnation of political violence, whatever its source.

It is especially important that the president of our country refrain from highly partisan rhetoric that further inflames tensions in our deeply divided nation. Unfortunately, the President has said that he only heeds those who are absolute loyalists to him and his administration. I therefore recommend that his supporters urge him to support free speech, nonviolence and the golden rule.
