Alden Adams Mosshammer
West Lebanon, NH – Alden Adams Mosshammer, Professor Emeritus of
History from 1972 to 2003 at the University of California San Diego,
died in Escondido, California at age 82 on July 31, 2023. He was born
March 22, 1941 in Greenwich Connecticut to the late Alden Smith
Mosshammer and Margaret Adams Mevis. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from
Amherst College in 1962 and earned a PhD in Classics from Brown
University in 1970.
Alden pursued his two passions – the love of the outdoors and
Classical Studies in history with tenacious vigor. He was a
multi-published scholar, able to conduct his research in both Latin
and Greek. His most recent publication, The Easter Computus and the
origins of the Christian Era, is celebrated for its breakthrough
conclusions. He also worked closely with Oxford University press and
edited and submitted errata for dozens of books. Alden had a love of
animals, a keen mind, and a dry sense of humor that was only surpassed
by the love of his family.
Alden is survived by, his sisters Nancy M. Neuman, and Margaret M.
Walsh, and his four stepsons Robert Furbush, Stephen Furbush, Gregory
Furbush, and Jeffrey Furbush. His wife Mary Mosshammer died June 27,
2025.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 13th at 1 PM at
the West Lebanon Cemetery in West Lebanon, NH. If you would like to
