ENFIELD — The Zoning Board of Adjustment has granted entrepreneurs Anne Chapin and Marshall Banks a special exception to open a dog park on the ground floor of their prospective bar Bark & Bevy on Route 4.

The Enfield board granted the special exception in a vote of 4 to 1 at its Tuesday meeting.

As proposed, Bark & Bevy would feature a dog park and restaurant seating on the building’s ground floor, while the bar would be located on the second floor.

Before Chapin and Banks could move forward with their business plan, they required a special exception to the zoning ordinance for the town’s Community Business District that would allow kennel use on the property.

The board’s approval wrapped in several conditions, including that dogs may not be left outside the establishment at any time.

Dogs also would only be permitted on the premises when the bar is open, and never before 11 a.m.

The special exception also stated that the brook that runs through the property at 330 Route 4 must be protected from the dogs’ urine and excrement.

The building, which is owned by Mickey and Darcy Dowd, was formerly occupied by Gusanoz Mexican Restaurant until it shuttered last December.

To move forward, the new project still needs site plan approval from the town’s Planning Board.
