WOODSTOCK, N.H. โ€” A group of Dartmouth College students staying at a club lodge in the White Mountains sprang into action by helping to carry an injured hiker off Mt. Moosilauke on Saturday evening, receiving acknowledgment from New Hampshire Fish & Game for lending a hand in the rescue operation.

State conversation officers were alerted that a 71-year-old female hiker from Northampton, Pa., had fallen and โ€œsuffered a serious but non-life-threatening injuryโ€ while hiking down Gorge Brook Trail from the summit of Mt. Moosiluake near Woodstock, N.H., on Saturday afternoon, NH Fish & Game said in a news release.

The injured hiker tried to reach the trailhead, only 0.43 miles away, but she ultimately needed to request assistance.

By happenstance, Dartmouth students participating in college summer programs and work parties were staying at the Dartmouth Outing Clubโ€™s Ravine Lodge and at other Dartmouth-owned facilities at the mountain. A team of 13 students in addition to โ€œone passerby EMT from a local medical serviceโ€ volunteered to assist a Fish & Game conservation officer to carry the hiker down to the trailhead, the news release said.

Medics from Lindwood Ambulance were waiting for the rescue team when they arrived at the trailhead. From there, the hiker was transported to Littleton Regional Healthcare for further assessment and treatment.
