BRADFORD, Vt. — A Special Town Meeting to fill a vacant Selectboard seat is scheduled for August.

The election is to fill the seat Dan Perry III vacated when he resigned May 8. After his resignation, he told the Valley News he had “lost interest” in the position after about 20 years on the board.

At the board’s meeting last Thursday, the four remaining Selectboard members voted unanimously to hold a Special Town Meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Bradford Academy auditorium to elect a new board member by Australian ballot.

Selectboard Vice Chairman Michael Wright had also signaled plans to leave the board earlier this month, but has since decided to stay.

After the board’s May 8 meeting, Wright submitted a letter of resignation citing threats he said he had gotten from supporters of the firefighters who quit last month, and conflict with Selectboard Chairwoman Meroa “Peep” Benjamin.

Since the board had not yet voted to accept Wright’s resignation, he was able to rescind it and remain on the board.

Residents interested in running for the vacant seat must submit a consent of candidate form, along with a petition signed by 25 registered voters to the town clerk by June 30. Absentee ballot requests can be made to the town clerk through July 31 at 4 p.m.
