HANOVER — Out of 22 applicants from across the country, Hanover chose its second-in-command as the town’s new chief of police.

On Tuesday, Town Manager Robert Houseman announced James Martin as the permanent chief, following Charlie Dennis’ retirement late last year. Prior to becoming interim police chief in December, Martin had been captain for four years.

Martin is credited with revitalizing the department’s Bike Patrol Unit, introducing e-bike initiatives, and expanding community outreach on senior scam prevention.

Before joining the Hanover Police Department, Martin served as a Supervisory Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, where he was deployed to the Sandy Hook school shooting and the Boston Marathon bombing, according to the news release.

“His experience in managing high-stakes law enforcement operations will be an asset to the Hanover community,” the news release said.
